In Heavy Metal now, their are + 50 differents genres, from Pagan Black Metal to Folk Symphonic passing by Brutal Death Metal and Pornogrind ^^
Metalheads are unique community, passionnated first. The problem I think actually, for people who don't like it, it's the raw and agressive voices, but musicianship is often impressive. Festivals, to have done several myself, are pure enjoyment. It makes me want to watch Wayne's World again!
I don't discuss taste of anyone, just say you've it in the blood or not, it's a vibe you feel and overall keep at the first listening.
Speaking as drummer, I can say Blast beats and crazy kick drums speed offered a new dimension to Extrem Metal by the years, just check this:

I like a lot of the old school bands like Sabbath, Priest and Metallica, too. I feel so fucking old calling Pantera old school. lol. That was my teen years shit.

There are a ton of bands I like. I'll post more later. I gotta work soon.

 

I enjoy some metal, but then again I enjoy most music. Not really crazy about most the biggest names in metal, Metallica, Priest, Etc. I don't think they're bad I just don't really have enthusiasm for their music.

Megadeth is my favorite metal band...there are oh so many more but I've been a Megadeth band ever since Dave Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica. All for the better, I'm not sure what I'd do without them LOL

It would be easy to say metal killed itself, with all the different genres, and "fan loyalty" to those genres, but it just isn't true. The whole entertainment profession has changed, talent is not required, it's still out there, just much much harder to make a living playing any kind of RnR.
In my eyes, what is presented, is spoon fed.
Kids don't listen to full albums, from an artist, just songs on a play list. The problem there is a lack of exposer, to the true talent of exceptional artists. That in turn narrows recognition of what is real talent, heartfelt music that touches, and stands the test of time. The flavor of the day, is what makes the industry money, they are just fine with an act having some success, and fading away, there is always the next in line.
The music suffers, the musicians suffer, and the fans suffer, the industry does not.
That's my take. Luckily there is still enough great music out there, with the occasional new, to keep me rock in.
