4 bold predictions for how 'Game of Thrones' will end
WARNING: SO MANY GAME OF THRONES SPOILERS AHEAD! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN LAST SUNDAY'S EPISODE
Ready? Let's go.
The series finale of GoT is Sunday, and while there are a lot of fans who are hugely disappointed by the eighth season, there are still a ton of die-hards tuning in hoping for some kind of satisfying ending.
That's what we're here for -- four of our writers and editors came up with their best guesses as to what happens on Sunday. Who will end up alive or dead? Who will take the Iron Throne, whether it's by force or by, well, more force?
Here's what we came up with:
Jon Snow is king
I've written this before and I'll do it again. It's a song of "Fire and Ice." This is a story about Aegon Targaryen (a.k.a. Jon Snow), who was born both a Targaryen (fire) and a Stark (ice). He will finish the show as the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. To put Jon/Aegon in his rightful place on the Iron Thrones, Arya will kill Daenerys. The fan theories have been fun, but this show hasn't had many surprises for us this season, and I don't think they're going to start now. -- Henry McKenna
Gendry gets involved
I think Gendry will play an important role in the finale after missing the destruction at King’s Landing entirely, presumably to chill in his new castle at Storm’s End. Daenerys made Gendry the lord of Storm’s End to win his loyalty, but I suspect we’ll see him flip sides after hearing about her descent into madness and play a role in her inevitable death (which will come at the hands of... GREY WORM). Gendry, after all, has a claim to the (potentially destroyed) Iron Throne as Robert Baratheon’s son, and if Jon Snow isn’t going to step up and take the seat, he might not have a problem letting an ally fill the vacancy.
Arya can then broker an alliance between Gendry and Sansa, who will rule the north as the Lady of Winterfell. Tyrion will survive the finale, somehow, Bronn won't get his castle, and Yara Greyjoy will never appear, as it seems the writers have forgotten about her completely. -- Nick Schwartz
No one rules
I am sticking with my preseason pick: No one will be on the throne by the end of the season. I think Arya is on her way to kill Dany, knowing it's for the good of the realm. But then Jon doesn't want it, Gendry is probably cool with Storm's End, Tyrion doesn't really have a case (brother-in-law of the last king?), Bran is the Three-eyed Raven and not a ruler, and Sansa likely wants to stay in the North and rule there.
So Jon and Tyrion allow Arya to kill Dany, and then Jon gets the lone remaining dragon to symbolically burn the throne into a puddle of metal. Everyone goes back to their respective parts of Westeros and will rule each of their regions. And the lesson is when you play a game of thrones, you all lose. -- Charles Curtis
King Hot Pie?!
This series ends in a hot pie ex machina. On his way to become lord of Storm's End, Gendry stops by the Inn at the Crossroads and runs into his old pal Hot Pie. Over hot pies, Hot Pie reveals that he is a secret Targaryen, maybe the bastard son of Dany's weenie older brother from Season 1. Hot Pie has a dragon now, and he has harnessed its power to make some extremely hot pies. From the corner of the room, an old barmaid pulls off her face and reveals that she's been Arya the whole time, and Arya's all, "What the hell, Hot Pie? We need that dragon to defeat your vengeful aunt who just lost her mind." Hot Pie is like, "That's fine," and Hot Pie's dragon turns out to breathe its fire with laser-like precision it developed caramelizing sugar. Hot Pie seems overwhelmed by it all but he realizes Dany is just going to come kill him once she finds out he exists, so gets on his dragon and the show randomly becomes a screwball comedy for a few minutes when in a fearful, jovial and ultimately triumphant sequence, Hot Pie flambees Dany, her last remaining dragon and all the Unsullied, maybe with some really goofy music playing and Hot Pie struggling to hold on to the dragon, all, "whoaaaaaa!" Hot Pie is named king. His first decree is that everyone in Westeros should eat more hot pie, and everyone laughs, and he is universally beloved. -- Ted Berg
