Transition Football’s trio wins big with Highlands Park FC
Thato Lekgetho, Tyrelle Saunders, and Sibo Ngcakani, who won the GDL title with Highlandspark FC, are making Claudio Lorenzani from Transition Football float on cloud nine.

Local football talent is on the rise, and Transition Football is leading the charge. In an exciting conclusion to the season, three of Transition Football’s brightest stars, Thato Lekgetho, Tyrelle Saunders, and Sibo Ngcakani, have clinched the coveted GDL title with Highland Park FC.

This achievement is the culmination of a phenomenal year for Transition Football, which has seen a record number of graduates go on to excel in local and international leagues.
“So, Tyrelle was our captain at the beginning of the year. We then recommended him to Highlands Park who snapped him up straight away and he became a regular starter in their U19 team.
“A few months later, after a friendly with Highlands, they wanted to look at Thato. He went on trial and too was snapped up straight away,” said the director of the club, Claudio Lorenzani.
He said Sibo, on the other hand, trained with the club for four months and then also moved on, where as Thato had been with them for three years and Tyrelle for two years.
“Tyrelle also attended our Scotland trip in December last year, and I feel this was vital for his development.”

Lorenzani said he can see that the players have matured at Highlands and recently played with them in a friendly match.
“We lost 5–3, but it was highly entertaining. I’m glad we stopped the boys from scoring as they would have given me banter about it if they did. This is what we do, develop players and move them on, as we now have sent players to all the big PSL Clubs.
“We are also very proud of them and to see their growth. It also shows that we are on the right track, in terms of our development structure, as this year we have seen our most graduates ever. I am also excited to see new trialists at our trials to hopefully develop that talent.
“As a player, or club, there’s only so many trophies you can win. When you turn 18, what happens next is you need to get a professional contract, and that’s why we work so well. We give players opportunity to further their football at the highest level. We don’t make the focus just about winning, but rather about developing.”
