Hey. How come we say a pair of panties? If it's only one, then how come a pair? A shotgun's got two barrels but we don't say "a pair of shotguns."

here a shotgun can have a single barrel or double barrels we never call a shotgun with two barrels a pair it is always a double barrel shotgun.

 

Same thing with pants.... hmm... maybe because theres 2 holes for stuff to exit (like legs) but one on the other side for them to go in? but that still wouldn't answer the guns part... hmmm... time to Wiki Search it!

Here's what I found online about it. Seems panties and underpants derive from pants (pair of) and trousers (pair of) because...

Trousers or 'trews' are a modern form of breaches/britches. Notice the name - it contains the name for a gap (once more into the breach etc.) and that I think is because the middle part of a pair of trousers is a later addition. I think that the original trews were leg coverings - like all-round protective 'chaps' (chaps from cheeks - meaning side pieces - yes?) which may have sometimes been worn under a kirtle or kilt. often the genitals would be separately covered (or not) for easy access. when cod-pieces were the rage - a holder for cods - the leggings would definitely have been a pair without all-round cover.
So, partial answer - the clothing that covers the legs, bottom and genitals - was originally not in one piece and a pair of trousers was thus two leg-pieces joined together - with or without crotch cover.

 

I think it's even weirder that we refer to the top of a bikini as a "top" (singular) but the bottoms as "bottoms".

And yet, we never say "a pair of bikini bottoms".

More practical considerations took precedence. Hawaii insisted that it was entitled to its fair share of interstate highway dollars.

 

Buy some panties from a shop then take them back the next day and ask why there was only one in the pack when it said there was a pair... I'd hate to be at customer service and have someone ask that lol

 

I'll bet they never say that it's a pair on the packaging. For that very reason.
