4 Fixes for Subtitles Not Working on Crunchyroll

  • Open the app > Account > enable Show Closed Captions.
  • Open the app > Account > Subtitles/CC Language > choose your default language.
  • Open Safari > Settings > Websites > Manage Website Data > search Crunchyroll > click on Remove.

Basic Fixes

  • The subtitles may not be available: It is possible that a title on Crunchyroll has still not received the subtitles of your choice.
  • Disable VPN: A VPN can give you access to content outside your region. But it can prevent from using subtitles as well due to lack of availability.
  • Force quit and relaunch Crunchyroll: This will give the app a fresh start if it has been running in the background.
  • Update Crunchyroll app: Install the latest version of the app depending on your device.

Fix 1: Enable Subtitles

The first thing you need to do is enable subtitles in the Crunchyroll app. Sometimes while watching content in Japanese audio, subtitles have to be enabled manually.

Check on Crunchyroll App

Open the app > Account > enable Show Closed Captions.

Check on Desktop

Step 1: Open the Crunchyroll Website in web browser and then sign in to your account.

Step 2: Click on your avatar icon at the top-right corner > select My Account.

Step 3: Under Preferences, scroll down and then look for Video settings.

Step 4: Click the toggle next to Show Closed Captions to enable subtitles.

Check on Crunchyroll App on Apple TV

Step 1: Open the Crunchyroll app on your Apple TV or Apple TV 4K.

Step 2: Play an episode and then navigate to the Subtitles icon on the right side.

Step 3: Check and then enable subtitles.

Fix 2: Set a Default Subtitle Language

Crunchyroll lets you choose a default subtite language. Every time you watch an anime, the default language appears.

Following the same steps mentioned above based on your device, you just need to tap on Subtitles/CC Language to choose your default language.

Fix 3: Clear Browser Cache for Crunchyroll
